The use of the word ‘gay’ to insult something

Sunday, April 11th, 2004

This rant all started with this post here.
One of the admins of Boards insulted a users sig by calling it ‘gay’. When questioned on this he said he didn’t mean it in a homosexual way – see this post but later said his comment did mean it looked gay due to near naked men being in it (it was a picture of man utd celebrating some win) read the post here

My comment on his use of ‘gay’ was:
When the leader of a community of 22,000 people uses a word that desribes someone’s sexuality/identity as a way to slag off someones signature then it would seem more than tilting at windmills.

Would it be so easy to use if you replaced ‘gay’ with ‘jew’ or ‘black’ ? These words too are used by people to desribe their identity. Changing the spelling doesn’t change its meaning.

Another user posted this:

The use of the word gay in a pejorative sense (as in the context of Dev’s original comment) is (imho) inextricably linked to its homosexual meaning – effectively it an attempt to undermine the label that gay people themselves choose to use, just as gay radials have attempted to take the bite out of words like queer by using it themselves (queer nation etc.) .

Whenever I hear the word used by kids (and it appears to be very popular on the streets of dublin as a slag word), I intrinsically associate it back to a homosexual context. If you were a gay kid growing up, would you like the word you use in your head to understand what you are being used as a major putdown word by your mates? If everything “gay” is bad, what r u going to tell ur best friend when the time comes?

Egos being what they are this guy will never back down and the attitude that it’s okay to use this word as a negativism because the gamers use it is such a cop-out.

This guy can stick quotes from enlightened people in his sig all he wants but he certainly has a bit to go before understanding life and people. Enlightened my ass.

This is the crap that gay people have to deal with. And something I won’t stand for. I’ll correct and freak with everyone that uses a word me and my community to describe ourselves as a way of belittling someone or something.

I also didn’t appreciate his flatmate calling someone else a faggot, though as an insult it is correctly used. It’s a given that faggot is an automatic insult.

Also worth noting: Isn’t it funny to see the little lick-arses around DeVore trying to defend his argument, and only being able to back him up by making some stupid comments ? There is no intelligent argument to counter what myself, and the others said.

This anti-spam solution from James Seng might work.

Instant Karma – oh yeah

Thursday, April 8th, 2004

To everyone thats fucked me over, or thought they did, this is for you:

Instant Karma’s gonna get you,
Gonna knock you right on the head,
You better get yourself together,
Pretty soon you’re gonna be dead,
What in the world you thinking of,
Laughing in the face of love,
What on earth you tryin’ to do,
It’s up to you, yeah you.

Instant Karma’s gonna get you,
Gonna look you right in the face,
Better get yourself together darlin’,
Join the human race,
How in the world you gonna see,
Laughin’ at fools like me,
Who on earth d’you think you are,
A super star,
Well, right you are.

Well we all shine on,
Like the moon and the stars and the sun,
Well we all shine on,
Ev’ryone come on.

Instant Karma’s gonna get you,
Gonna knock you off your feet,
Better recognize your brothers,
Ev’ryone you meet,
Why in the world are we here,
Surely not to live in pain and fear,
Why on earth are you there,
When you’re ev’rywhere,
Come and get your share.

Well we all shine on,
Like the moon and the stars and the sun,
Yeah we all shine on,
Come on and on and on on on,
Yeah yeah, alright, uh huh, ah-.

Well we all shine on,
Like the moon and the stars and the sun,
Yeah we all shine on,
On and on and on on and on.

Well we all shine on,
Like the moon and the stars and the sun.
Well we all shine on,
Like the moon and the stars and the sun.
Well we all shine on,
Like the moon and the stars and the sun.
Yeah we all shine on,
Like the moon and the stars and the sun.

Talking BLX (Bollox)

Wednesday, April 7th, 2004

A new standard – BLX. I think all Weblogs and even many websites should automatically include this button. It would save a lot of trouble in the longrun. The best thing about bollox is that many people are automatically compliant. Its possibly the best written standard I’ve ever seen. People know it without even reading it. Thats pretty amazing.

I must download the button and stick it on this site.

Thought I added this already …

Compare Amazon prices

This site compares the cheapest prices between the various amazon stores worldwide to get you the cheapest items shipped to you. Just used it to find a book which was 12 dollars cheaper including shipping to get from the states.

Oh and the music from the latest Baileys ad is: les fleur by 4 Hero

This Mulley has been writing poetry of late, and some new prose. I might put it online somewhere.

you need to blog

Thursday, April 1st, 2004

Everyone should blog and discuss with the world or just yourself and google (yes no matter what you put online google will view it). If you think you have worthwhile thoughts then I would think its almost your duty to blog.

Blogs are not just one way. Its not like a newspaper article as with a blog people can comment on what you said and can enter a debate with you and other viewers can also join in on the debate. And unlike a crowded room where everyone wants to comment but can’t, everyone can comment and give their opinion on a blog. The blog gives everyone equal opportunity to comment and contribute.

Thats if comments aren’t turned off. They are on mine until I find a way to beat the spammers.

If you are an expert in your field, it would probably be most beneficial to that field to have your comments on various issues. I’ve seen blogs that are able to get some great minds talking over time. This leads to new ideas and bonds of friendship and knowledgesharing. Quite handy.

Mailing lists are good but force you to download all the content before seeing it. So you could be downloading a whole conversation which is junk whereas you can just ignore it online. If you get bored of the topic you just close the page and it need not bother you anymore. No unsubscribing of any sort or resubscribing.

So go blog !
