Firefly Convention is canceled at very last minute. Very pissed off fans. The actors still decided they are going to turn up and keep them happy though. This is respect for your fans.

Govt Websites lack basic accessibility standards – Red Cardinal

Sunday, December 10th, 2006

From a press release from Red Cardinal and report on their blog, it seems that the Irish Government websites aren’t really that good for accessibility. The exceptions being Dept. of Arts, Sports and Tourism, Dept. Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Dept. of Finance, Dept. of Social and Family Affairs.

Some key findings:

Government Department sites
25% Failed the minimum standard for accessibility
75% Failed both minimum accessibility and basic coding standards

Public body sites
33% Failed the minimum standard for accessibility
100% Failed both minimum accessibility and basic coding standards

Political Party sites
57% Failed the minimum standard for accessibility
100% Failed both minimum accessibility and basic coding standards

Interesting RSS stats:
25% of Government Department websites use RSS
11% of Public Body Websites use RSS
43% of Political Party Websites use RSS

ComReg now resorting to press releasing on a lazy Sunday

Sunday, December 10th, 2006

The IrelandOffline spies are always watching however. I quickly threw together a counter-release to the latest telecoms poodle spin below.

ComReg generally send out press releases last thing in the evening. You can picture them with their finger hovering over the send button and then legging it out of the darkened building which is now empty and all the lights are off. This is the best time to release something if you want it buried and can’t be questioned on it. Nobody home to answer questions. Too late by the next news cycle to then ask questions about it as the world has moved on. Which means you will see quick pieces in the press the next morning but nothing in-depth or investigative.

Releasing on a Sunday is however a new one for ComReg. I’m surprised this wasn’t just released the evening before the budget. My colleague in IrelandOffline refers to a quote from the Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy

“But Mr. Dent, the plans have been available [and on display] in the local planning office for the last nine months.”

“On display? I eventually had to go down to the cellar to find them.”

“That’s the display department.”

“With a flashlight.”

“Ah, well, the lights had probably gone.”

“So had the stairs.”

“But look, you found the notice, didn’t you?”

“Yes,” said Arthur, “yes I did. It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying ‘Beware of the Leopard.'”

ComReg are adhering to their obligations to inform the public. Nobody can argue otherwise but gotta love the way they release their reports.

Press release here.

Irish Blog Awards 2007 – Categories finalised/ Sponsorship update

Sunday, December 10th, 2006

Irish Blog Awards 21 categories. Maybe it can be expanded further next time but going from 13 to 21 is good enough for this one. I’ve also taken on-board the comments about sponsorship and so will try and be more frugal with the event expenses and so ask for less from sponsors. There will not be a main sponsor.

I’ll be looking for a standard fee for 20 of the categories. I think it will be €200-300 but price will be finalised once I get all costings and it might get down past the 200 euros mark if I get super-mean 🙂 I hope to have an auction for the Best Blog category sponsorship since so many were offering lots of money for that and I want to give a good prize along with the trophy for it. The auction will be slightly different in that the highest bid price will not be the accepted one. The highest bidder (if we have bidders) will pay the second highest bid price. Bids have to be 500 euros or more.

EDIT: The auction for Best Blog sponsorship will be private for obvious reasons. (second highest price goes to top biffer etc) Another post will follow on this auction process.

I want to cover all costs with sponsorship but there will be an entrance fee like last year. All money from the entrance fee will go to charity. Rick O’Shea is a patron of the Brainwave epilepsy charity so I think it should to go them this time. A different charity will be chosen at the next Awards. If we want one.

Best of luck to all going to Le Web 3 – I might see you in a Parisian bar

Sunday, December 10th, 2006

I’m off to Paris myself on Monday for a few days and so might try and escape away to an evening Le Web 3 event if I can. Meanwhile best of luck to those from Ireland presenting there.

EDIT: Congrats on the Electric News coverage and the Sunday Tribune coverage:

A TRIO of Irish online entrepreneurs will demonstrate their internet businesses to over 1,000 delegates at the International Web Expo in Paris this week.

Walter Higgins from Sxoop Technologies, Joe Drumgoole from Putplace. com and Conor O’Neill of Loudervoice. com are all due to present at the event, which is expected to draw an attendance of over 1,000 web entrepreneurs and venture capitalists.

The three Irish companies specialise in technology that makes it easier for people to locate, store and publish their own content on the internet…

Make money with your laptop. Have logos etched into it. Might work with macs but not a dull IBM or Dell laptop.

Very Short List. A quick daily email that recommends cool stuff you can buy. Boing Boing for those with an open wallet. I like this idea and I can see an Irish version of this being a success.
