William Gibson on Remix Culture

Friday, July 8th, 2005

William Gibson wrote a “wake the fuck up” style commentary in Wired Magazine about remix culture.

Loads of fantastic quotes but one not-specifically about remix-culture, but cultural shift in general:

We seldom legislate new technologies into being. They emerge, and we plunge with them into whatever vortices of change they generate. We legislate after the fact, in a perpetual game of catch-up, as best we can, while our new technologies redefine us – as surely and perhaps as terribly as we’ve been redefined by broadcast television.

Connect Via Books

Wednesday, July 6th, 2005

Connect to others via the Books they read. Interesting idea. I’ve signed up. It’s a pity that it doesn’t integrate more with Amazon so you can import past purchases and wishlists.

New company/customer relationships

Wednesday, July 6th, 2005

Via Doc Searls comes a post from Nellie Lyde on how a business is influenced massively by its customers.

This type of company is often started by a dissatisfied user.

An example would be Firefox.

I was sure I posted this link before too: Steven Berlin Johnson on how he collates information. This is just uber cool and geeky. I re-read that post yesterday and that’s how I signed up for Simpy.

Signed up for Simpy today. Another tagging social bookmark thing. This appears to cache the pages though and you can import and export bookmarks but what I like is it will also allow you make notes and store them. Hard to find what other users are tagging though.

Internet Justice

Via BoingBoing. Woman doesn’t clean up her dog’s mess — blog infamy ensues.

As Adam Curry said: There are no secrets, only information you don’t yet have… There’s no way you can hide with in the most connection country in the World.

Explode the Newsroom

Friday, July 1st, 2005

Via Macdara Conroy comes a link to Tim Porter on the future of newspapers. Yes, more of this debate which gets some in the traditional print world quite emotive. How many in the will be the ones taking part and shaping the Irish newsrooms of the future?

Googleshame

Thursday, June 30th, 2005

Googleshame definition: The use of Google tricks like Googlebombing to associate embarassing phrases with your Mark which result in the mark’s website appearing first in Google or using link phrases to make your protest site appear in search results for your mark’s site. An example would be the “more evil than Satan” googlebomb of a few years ago which brought you to the Microsoft website or doing a search for Beamish and Crawford will bring you to Tom Raftery’s Beamish and Crawford website.
