Carlow will become the country’s very first completely wireless-enabled broadband town later today as a result of a collaboration between metropolitan area network (MAN) provider e-Net and Carlow County Council.
Right…. but what does completely enabled mean?
The new network will be deployed three years ahead of Dublin’s proposed Wi-Fi network and will cover 50pc of businesses and 10pc of homes in Carlow town.
Bad enough that other telcos and associations have been talking horseshit about availability and coverage for years. Now ENet are starting this dishonest game. But of course it gets better.
Tiger economy, low unemployment rates? Yup, them too.
Pointing to statistics from IDA Ireland, he said that in 2004 only 20pc of new jobs were announced in the 27 phase one towns where MANs have been built. This increased to 40pc in 2005 and 60pc in 2006. “I would never say that that was down to the MANs on their own but I have to believe that we are having some impact.
He forgets to point out the timeframe when the MANs went live in those towns. How many small businesses are connected to MANs? How many can afford the 1000s a month to connect?
The Carlow start-up project has cost €3 million, with 90 per cent of the cost provided by the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources and 10 per cent by the local authorities.
3 Million for 11 access points and then to charge the same taxpayers to access it? Sickening. That’s 5-10 exchanges that could be upgraded for that.
Another domain offer thingy, this time from Spiral Hosting. Terms and conditions and yadda and yaddayaddayaddas apply.

Gore could still run. and it appears that some people are putting a campaign team together.
Via Paddy Anglican is the clip of Buddy Jesus. Stephen is actually an Anglican priest. At the wedding I was recently at and I swear to < insert deity here > this is true, the mural inside over the church doors had a Jesus that pretty much was doing the Buddy Jesus pose. Really odd.

Edit: Wouldn’t this make a great PoliticalThicko piss-take? Pat leaning in, talking to the person. “Hi, I’m Pat, now that you are tied into the bed, let me tell you about how to Make a Change.”
I was thinking about the idea of Coworking again and previously I mentioned the idea of twinning with another Coworking location but there was something still niggling at me about this and eventually with the way the brain works, the cloud of thoughts got less cloudy and I started wondering would the FON model work for Coworking. FON basically is a worldwide wifi network that gives away wireless modems for free or quite cheaply. When you put your modem online, it becomes part of the FON network as do you. While abroad you can then log on to the network for free since you are hosting a FON modem. People who are not members of FON pay to access the network at a cheap price. You can choose not to partake in the roaming offer also, while still being a member and instead you’ll get half the fee that FON charges someone to access your router.
Anyways, left a comment over on James’ site about the idea. Wouldn’t it be nice to travel the world or country and hop from one place to another for plug in for free in return for you having a Coworking facility that allows a few free seats for the nomad Coworkers?
I like this idea. Some colleges in the States are getting students to blog about the colleges. Cheap and transparent marketing for colleges. The Irish ones should do that instead of spending fortunes in papers, on radio ads and on television asking students to sign up with them.
Meanwhile, Eamo Dunphy considers getting a blog.

Jamendo Radio Blog. Handy(ish) online music player for Creative Commons music. New feature allows you to do a LastFM kind of thing where you input mainstream artists and it tries to serve you artists of the same genre from their collection. Currently listening to a rock ballad from some Italian band .. after I asked for BJork-like music. You can even get a widget of it for your blog.

Via Tim. Christ. Remember that UK crackdown (and Irish one too) where they arrested a whole load of people for downloading child porn from a website that the FBI had infiltrated? Seems the website owners also traded in stolen credit card numbers and so many of those arrested in the UK and accussed of paying for and downloading child porn (yer man from Massive Attack was one) were innocent of such a horrible act and were victims of credit card thieves. 5000 accused, 39 suicides.
Way late on this but Xerox had a bookfair in Second Life. Different at least.
