Thye Came So Far For Beauty – Leonard Choen Tribute in Dublin Oct 4th

Lou Reed, Nick Cave, Jarvis Cocker, Beth Orton, Antony Hegarty of Antony and the Johnsons fame, and Gavin Friday will all cover Leonard Cohen songs at this show. Got my two tickets from Ticketmaster this morning. Cost me €152 for two tickets but I got good seats front and centre.

  1. Now i like a broad range of music, and most of what i dont like i can still listen to. But i absolutly hate the music of Leonard Choen.
But if we all liked the same stuff the world would be boring.
    Nice lineup though.

Wow, that’s pricey; I’d much rather see the man himself (naturally), and there was talk of him touring again due to his manager ripping him off…
I still have to see Neil Young and Dylan though, but those two and Cohen are on my ‘must see’ list for definite.

I passed on Dylan, I’d pay a fortune to see Cohen though I think many artists do his songs better than he does, just like Dylan. Would love to see Tom Waits live too. Still wondering should I fly somewhere to get to see Pearl Jam. Also on my list to see is Bjork.

Cohen is amazing. THanks for the reminder Damien – just bought my tickets now. 151.90 better be worth it.

  5. Adam says:

Jesus, yeah; Tom Waits live would be amazing. I’m not sure if it’s true but I heard before he plays secret gigs in tiny venues every year in Ireland; his wife is Irish and that’s how it got started (or something).
Got my ticket for Pearl Jam in August, seated sadly but it’s better than nothing. I got to see them when they played last, my first proper gig and still one of the best; although as far as a show goes you can’t beat Tool.

Bjork, not really pushed; would probably go to see Prince out of curiosity though, even though he’s way past his best he can still bang out the classics!

That’d better be true – you can’t leave tantilising rumours around the place like that without at least googling to check first!

Well it was a rumour passed to me from a longtime Waits fan, not via the internet however; I’d love it to be confirmed but I don’t think google is going to do that for me :S

tom Waits is a living genius…..He is touring the States soon…check it out over here http://eyeballkid.blogspot.com/

I’d consider flying out to see him in case he keels over anytime soon. I saw bob dylan in Marley park a couple of years ago and I wasn’t too impressed, no crowd interaction and seemed a little uninterested to me….I know this is the ‘enigma’ of the man yadda yadda..

I’d love to have seen guns n roses but i would even consider seeing tem with the current line up

definetly though tom waits is the man…spread the word!

Hope you enjoy the show, it’s a bit pricey! Have you seen this video?

went to see They Came So Far for Beauty last night 4/10/06 and i feel i have to say it was apalling. we left before the interval. the artists with the exception of Lou Reed murdered the songs. In my opinion a total waste of money.

I went last night – it was superb. Top class. As fine a tribute to Cohen as I could imagine.

Saw the concert last night. i have to say I am an avid cohen fan and in many respects the concert was great. However some of the versions of the tracks performed were not to my taste and I feel they took away some of the essence of cohens music. in particular closing time was ruined and Gavin Friday and O Hara killed Hallelujah. Nick Cave on the other opened with a fabulous performace of avalanche and did all his tracks justice. Also Anthony of Antony and the Johnsons did a wonderful job. A performer that I had never heard of or seen before I wil be tracking down his other work.

All in all an excellent night even though you had to endure 4 hours of those poxy point seats. It’s just a shame the man himself did not turn up for a rendition of Famous Blue Raincoat.

  13. pauleile says:

Was at Thursday’s Gig, thought Gavin Friday and MMO’H’s version of Hallujah was great, thought Lou Reed was only great on Joan of Arc, but overall a brillent night.

  14. Patrik says:

Went to this, Lou Reed was pretty good (don’t know about the rocking version of one song he did, cant remember which it was…), and plus like, this is the guy who wrote Sunday Morning, and Heroin etc. etc. Handsome Family were great i thought (famous blue raincoat, really well done). There was an annoying screamy singer, i thought that was a bit annoying, was it for hallelujah? like, i’m a Mike Patton fan, and listen to hardcore metal, but that screaming was just pissing me off. And Gavin Friday, dear jesus, what a pillock. Antony was pretty good, but i find his voice irritates me after a while. Nick Cave was very good also.
However, i was kinda pissed that i had to sit on the balcony, i was a little bit late, and would have udnerstood not sitting in my alloted seats, but not even getting a seat? Pure bullshit on the part of the point.
Also why did they not all KNOW the songs? These people are supposed to be fans, thats what tributes are about, why do they need lyrics sheets? Was it Gavin Friday who TOTALLY f’d up one song?
    Again Pillock

  15. Patrik says:

Oh poor Jarvis cocker, he was good enough fun too,
And the band were pretty good, thought they could have stuck to the original score a bit more though, noticed a lot of melodies lost from the originals, and new things put in place. Guess it was only a tribute though…

  16. frankp says:

Hallelujah was pure genius. That O’Hara woman is brilliant. Don’t care what anyone else says.

Damien, did you see your pal there? Hint: fourth last paragraph

  17. Nigel says:

Well, I don’t know about ‘pricey’…..came from the Uk for one night, parked at Bristol, flew Ryan Air, had a night’s B & B, saw the show, flew home next morning…..would have paid 10 times as much for the experience. Saw LC at the Albert Hall on the ‘I’m your man tour’, & would walk over burning coals to be able to see him again….but this was as good a ‘second best’ as I guess I’ll ever get ( x 2 for cost’s as wife included !)

  18. Torunn says:

I love Leonard Cohen and wish he could come to Norway to do a concert. I would be the first in that queue..
