New eircom mobile network (eMobile) to launch in October?

Because adding a question mark means when you’re proved wrong you can say it was just an inquiry, not solid fact.

Adrian Weckler covered the pending launch of the new eircom mobile phone network this autumn.

A little digging and we see that they are kitting out new stores all around the country. The planning permission on a store on Patrick’s Street/Opera Lane in Cork states it’s for eircom. A quick search on Recruit Ireland finds the job listings. The perks pretty much tell you it’s eircom. What’s interesting is that the jobs start at the end of the month and you’ll get three weeks training. That would mean that the new staff are ready to go at the end of September.

The TIF conference (big telco industry back slapathon) is early October too. It would be good to have that launched at or before it and soak up the buzz.

The name didn’t fit right with me, so I dug more. Corporates already work with Eircom Mobile. EircomMobile.ie hasn’t been registered though. Lots of other ones are however.

Lots of playing on the CRO website for business names and we see that eMobile is a business name for eircom. eMobile.ie is owned by eircom but has been for a long while it seems. And then there’s the emobileie account on Twitter. But eircomMobile exists too.

So I think we’re on track for an October launch and a possible name is eMobile. Or maybe e-Mobile. But it could also be Eircom Mobile. I’d prefer eMobile.

  1. John says:

    Do they not own meteor?

  2. SK says:

Probably won’t be eMobile as there is a a mobile operator with that name already in Japan. Interestingly that eMobile is data only (they say “we are happy to be a bit pipe”), and distinguishes themselves by offering highest speed, lowest price, flat rate data plans.

  3. Sinéad says:

Yeah I don’t understand this either, why would Eircom launch a competitor to Meteor? :-/

  4. Perhaps it’s just a Meteor rebranding?

  5. If it means I can use a microcell, and my eircom landline as bb/wireless backhaul to finally get mobile coverage in my rural valley, yes please!

  6. Steph says:

Confused. As already suggested, are they not already in the mobile game as Meteor?

Then again, The Spiders have been open for nominations since July according to their one-page website.

  7. Rob says:

As said, Eircom own meteor, in fact their support is dire. If forming a new company would fix that, then all the better.

  8. I don’t understand, is Eircom going to become an MVNO sitting on a mobile network they in fact already own?

Eircom have been selling mobile dongles with Eircom branding (which I assume uses the Meteor network).

By the way, I did get an email from Eircom a few weeks back about them launching a “mobile phone portal project” and asking to feature Politics.ie on it, perhaps that’s something to do with it?

  9. Roisin Bell says:

I’m very impressed with your investigative talents Damien! What motivated you to do all that digging?

Meteor is pitched as being a low cost operator, and doesn’t even sell the iPhone. Smart phones will lead the way in operator revenue in the next few years, and Eircom can’t afford to miss out on this.

Re-branding Meteor properly would probably be difficult to achieve, so they’ve evidently decided to compete with it instead, and cover all customer bases. These range from the cash-strapped consumer, who will go for a basic Meteor package, to the technology fanatic (out there in rapidly increasing numbers) who will pay whatever it takes to have the latest piece of mobile technology.

Looking forward to hearing if you’re right about the name in October…

  10. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eircom#Eircom_Mobile_.28MVNO.29

Looks like it’s just an MVNO on their own Meteor network, for business customers. Bizarre. Market segmentation, I suppose…

  11. David Smith says:

its a fully fledged network using the 085 prefix launching at the end of september. It has its own stores, own tariffs and own customer support. Its completely seperate from meteor tho…and aimed at a different market.

  12. Hmm, isn’t Eircom in terrible financial trouble, anyway?

  13. David: Well, it’s almost certainly an MVNO, so not actually completely separate from Meteor đŸ™‚ A branding thing, essentially.

  14. Conor says:

Meteor might not sell the iPhone, but they do sell plenty of smartphones.

  15. David Smith says:

not a true MVNO like Tesco Mobile….and not a rebranding either. Its another network thats using the existing network of sites that eircom operates via meteor.

  16. Annoymus says:

It will be called emobile, similar to tesco mobile, will be sharing with the metoer network.

  17. anonymous says:

unlike tesco though, there will be a billpay and prepay offer….and it will be a slightly new concept in the irish market in terms of their targeting.

  18. Raul says:

I think thats the one you’re looking for : http://www.myeircommobile.ie

  19. anonymous says:

it will be called emobile. they are due to open at the end of september, a friend of mine is training with them. i think meteor are targeting the younger market with facebook etc on your phone and these guys will target the older market with bill pay etc

  20. RĂ³nĂ¡n says:

Meteor is a brand of eircom primarily targeting 16-25 year-olds.
eircom are trying to utilize their own brand to target the business market and 25+ residential age group, which would be achieved using the eircom Mobile brand.

Both Meteor and eircom Mobile brands will be run from the Meteor division of the group using the one mobile network. They wont be competitors of each other as they are specifically targeting different demographics and customers of either brand will still be customers of the overall mobile division.

this has been done abroad similarly eg in Holland KPN’s mobile network has 2 brands, kpn Mobile and Telfort. in Austria T-Mobile have their own brand and the Telering brand.

  21. […] Meteor.ie Ireland’s third mobile phone operator is owned by eircom and appeals to the youth market. This will be an interesting one to watch in coming months as eircom looks set to launch a new mobile operation in October – possibly to be named e-mobile. […]

  22. Jack says:

The new eircom will be calling it emobile, one, to target an old age, emobile holders will only be able to topup in shops and only topup with there credit or debit cards through on registered company in Ireland…but what company???

  23. dead says:

  26. vicky says:

  27. Conor says:
