It was interesting watching the people surrounding him, on the television. First, he was flanked by Noel Dempsey and Brian Cowen, but RTÉ set their camera so that of those two only Cowen on our right was in the frame.

That meant that in addition to the Taoiseach, Gormley, Lenihan and Cowen were in shot for most of it. Only Lenihan had the grace to look steadily without making any faces during the speech. Gormley was distracted at one stage, and given the strong "Uachtaráin Fhianna Fáil" element of the speech, I wondered whether he really should have been there in the first place.

And when the speech was fninished and it was time to walk back up, Willie O'Dea strips the dignity by waving a paper at somebody down the left hand corridor and has a quick chat before dragging them up the stairs. No sense of show, that man.

It was a nice stroke for him to announce his resignation surrounded by cabinet colleagues -- no lonely walk down the steps and back up for the populist Bertie.

RTE came out with the 'News Special: Correspondent Joe O'Brien looks back at the life and career of Bertie Ahern' a bit quick didn't they? Bit like the BBC preparing the Queen Mums obituary for 10 years before it happened!

Also poor web mastery on RTE's part, check out http://rte.ie (no www)

Ah, Michael Kennedy made that comment. Smart man, that.

He also just said: "Most of this problem was driven by the media, [...] the ordinary person on the ground [...] knows that Bertie Ahern is not a corrupt person".

A Dublin-based Fianna Fáil TD (Michael something) just said on RTÉ news: "We have 2 million people employed now where, when he came into office, we had 2 million people on the dole."

... er, what???
