What you’re describing is an Omni/Multiplex type experience- something that has (regrettably) become the norm. That kind of cinema experience is (I happily admit) shit and one of the main reasons why I don’t go to the cinema as often as I’d like.

There are (of course) other cinema experiences to be had, though chances to have such experiences grow fewer and fewer. There’s a wider battle being fought here between forces that reduce cinema to an out-of-town, shopping centre type affair and those who want to see it retain some dignity and remain on a more human level (like theatre).

But I digress. I personally only enjoy watching films when the circumstances are right. That means a dark room, peace and quiet, a decent sized screen (TV is fine), decent sound, and a comfortable seat. That’s just me. I like that cosy, closeted intimacy.

You just don’t get that experience with an iPhone. You may get another type of (casual) experience but it’s not (at least for me and, it seems, David Lynch) the same.

The CINEMA experience is over-rated. Unless of course you get off on seeing the lights of fucking mobile phones 4 rows in front, the giggling of kids to the left, the smell of stale popcorn, the queues for concession stands and the shit ads we have to sit through. Never mind the cost for a one off showing. And the sound? Fuck off. It’s certainly not more impressive than my iPhone. Don’t get me started on the chairs and their extra special surprise chewing gum traps.

Yeah, Mr Lynch, movies must be great in your personal 130 seat home theater, you prick.

I’d never even watch a movie I really wanted to see on my PC, never mind a FUCKING telephone.

Mr. Lynch is a movie magician and good on him for trying to keep some of that magic alive in what used to be an art-form.

TV experience: Visual 40% Audio 40% Surroundings 10%
