This can lead to coruption and data loss sometimes being irrecoverable such as I suspect is what happend in Niall's case. Ubuntu really is an amazing distro though. Best of luck with it if you decide to use it! And sure, booting the live cd can't hurt anything either so might as well try it out for the sake of science and furthering knowledge and all that jazz. After I installed Ubuntu on my hard drive something happened which <a href="http://blog.niallok.com/index.php/2007/06/29/ubuntu-killed-my-windows/" rel="nofollow">corrupted my Windows partition beyond repair</a> and I had to reformat and reinstall. I've got Ghost installed now doing regular backups and it'll be a while before I trust myself enough to go re-partitioning and installing Linux again!
