[...] If I contrast that with the email I got from Lar Veale regarding IQContent they are worlds apart. Lar sent me a short succint email asking me politely if I wouldn’t mind mentioning their vacancies on here. The request was simple and to the point. I didn’t have to open extra attachments or work harder to access the information I needed, as it was all contained within a succint email. Damien posted an article about contacting journalists a while back. There’s no reason why people shouldn’t treat bloggers any differently. [...]

[...] As you may or may not be aware, I write a column for the Sunday Tribune and I have this blog here too. I’m always interested in tech stories for my column, as is my boss. I put a blog post together before on how to make contact with Irish Journalists and now I’m offering to profile any and all tech startups. Now, to be clear, this is not for the Sunday Tribune, this is for me so I can get a better feel for the next generation of tech companies in Ireland and get to know more people in tech. It might help me get more material for columns I write too. I will put the profiles up on a blog. Possibly not this one but another. Since a lot of Irish journalists read this blog and my other blogs, there is a strong chance of getting spotted by them too. It will also get you spotted by other tech bloggers who might like you enough to evangelise you on their blog. Win win, right? [...]

[...] Know what they write on, how they write, what way they will report on the details and what their level of knowledge is. Talk in their language and their vocabulary. Know what their news cycle is too. Ringing someone up at 5pm on a Friday evening is no good for a lot of sections in a Sunday paper. Don’t ring someone up on some topic that they have never covered. For example, some journalists will cover consumer issues but some will only cover pure tech issues. Sometimes these do not mix. Pointless selling a story to someone that will never buy it. Additionally, know the areas they cover that are not relevant to you, but if something of interest to them appears in your inbox, send it on to them. Keep them sweet if you can. Also check out what journalists want from you. [...]

One fairly important point is attachments. Many newspaper emails wont handlt attachments. The Indo's email didn't accept them a while back, though this may have been sorted. So it's always a good idea to cut and paste it in a fairly attractive text form in the body of the text. If you have photos, great, but maybe dont send hugh hi-res with the first email. Send thumbnails and make sure the journo/editor knows hi res are easily available (for free, of course).

One thing not pointed out - a press release accompanied by photos sent to a radio station newsroom will go into the dustbin faster than light.

It's just common sense. It helps to write the main points of the story and have them in front of you.

And PR people, stop ringing up and asking "did u get my email." If it didn't bounce back, we got it.

But christ, some PRs take the piss. One well known PR company called and for once it was actually decent and so I asked could I interview some people.

I did and was about to run it when I was told you can't do it this Sunday as we've offered it as an exclusive to another newspaper but we could run it the week after was her cheery suggestion.

Email and a phone call.

I love this:

"Email is always best - as long as it’s not too long - as it allows the journalist to quickly skim the content"
