Old Boy – Crazy Korean Cinema

Have seen this a few times already but here’s the trailer for Old Boy. Few years old now. Korean cinema is really kicking ass of late. Apparently there’s going to be a US remake with Nicholas Cage. God. Warning, movie contains over-the-top violence and fuckedupness.

  1. I’m into my Asian cinema and all, but you know, I really didn’t think much of Old Boy. Although it looked gorgeous, the plot was so OTT and so pompous I could barely keep in the inappropriate laughter. Compared to Sympathy For Lady Vengeance, it was a mess.

Still haven’t seen Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance. Though I fully intend to!

Not seen Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, seen Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and wasn’t that impressed but I did see it after Old Boy so my view might have been skewed.

  3. Lady Vengeance is well worth it. It’s both gorgeous and horrifically brutal, yet not in the gory way most Asian cinema seems to aspire to. Some parts of Lady were extremely hard to watch, and this from a girl who thinks Irreversible is a masterpiece.

A friend recommended Old Boy and Ichi the Killer to me last month… so I got Ichi the Killer and it was way too fucked up for me, so theres no way I’m going to get Old Boy after that.

  5. Damien says:

Ichi is much more extreme really. Old Boy plays with your head more.
