Comments on: Auds got me appreciating pornography

I got their album ‘Mass Romantic’ about 5 years ago. Letter from an Occupant was class, and the rest of the songs were surprisingly catchy but sounded very amateurish… entertaining summer music though. Can you recommend some of their more recent stuff that I should get?

I agree with you about the latest Flaming Lips album… I felt similarly about their previous album ‘Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots’. They produce some great tracks, but a lot of their stuff seems too experimental for me, If they ever release a traditional rock album I’m sure it would be a huge hit… but then, like Radiohead, its not really their style anymore I suppose.

Haven’t got the new Flaming Lips yet – like the Bob Dylan-esque ad for it though.

The New Pornographers are amazing. You should check out Neko Case’s new album, which is very good too. As is the male lead singer’s solo efforts, AC Newman.

Josh Ritter is pretty good – The Animal Years is more produced than the first two, but it’s pretty cool.

I was rather bewildered at the title, and was wondering what I done to make you appreciate pornography…..I don’t remember making any recently.

I don’t think the problem is with the FLips’ sound. The problem I have with it is that unlike everything up till now, it lacks substance. While an album with a few songs like that is easily forgivable, but an album full of them? It feels like a bum note. I’m *hoping* it’s a bum note. But yeah, this is my third day with the album, and I’m going to give it a few more goes. I’m not too positive though…

Oh, and a tip: if you don’t already know them, go and check out The Russian Futurists. They’re kind of like The Postal Service, but predate the TPS by a while. I was listening to Let’s Get Ready to Crumble at the weekend, and it’s a top album. Haven’t heard the new one yet though.

The more I listen to it the more I get that feeling in my mouth that I’ve eaten too many fizzy cola bottles. It’s too quick a sugar high and nothing lasts. It’s like an album for a 12 year old girl’s birthday party.

I know there are a few dips on the Lips album, but it’s definitely not as gloomy as all that. Maybe a few more listens might improve it or do you think they’ve been milking that same sound for too long?

Hearing you on the new FLips album. It’s just so… boring. My heart sank right in the middle of “Free Radicals”. Quite listenable, but lacking even one memorable song. Maybe if I listen to it I’ll change my mind, but I doubt it.
