Liam Lawlor fiasco: It wasn’t bloggers who jumped the gun.

The Indo and some other tabloid rag jumped the gun big time. I love how big media slam the likes of bloggers jumping the gun yet now we have the biggest selling Sunday Paper (apart from those tabloids) writing a vile piece of journalism yesterday. At least in the online world of blogs if you get something wrong you’ll have a few 100 bloggers on your ass correcting you within hours or even minutes. The public in essence is your editor.

    It is the family of the driver I feel sorriest for – imagine having it reported that you were found dead in a car with a prostitute and Liam Lawlor!

    Maybe in america but we don’t have the volume of blogs. especially ones that talk about Irish politics. How many blogs have writen much about Liam Lawlors death. If bloggers had the info they would have. But still it good to see that they got it wrong and the blogs got it right. We can tell them that if they question us.

    Not sure if anyone saw the Panel on RTE 2 last night. If you did, Neil Delamere was so right.

    1. Barry Egan comments;
    2. Irish social diarist comments generally; and
    3. Why would he have been in the front.

    In any case, I firmly believe that media of the nature displayed at the weekend is cruel, heartless and very disrespectful.

    I hope the family do the decent thing and sue.

    Damien, nice pimping O’the blog.

    That’s also the problem. Because if a few 100 bloggers are correcting you in hours/minutes then a few thousand people are reading your factually incorrect stuff and wandering off with it before it’s edited. 1 guy posts something sensational. 50 blogs pick it up. The 51st blog actually discovers that part of the story isn’t true. 20 of the blogs update and post the new info within a week, 5 more in the next month…but the remainder never do. I just find it a bit worrying, as some elements rely on blogs more and more (it’s easier to trust the little guy) as opposed to looking at what they read with the cynicism required. Good work on the upgrade to wordpress + allowing comments etc.

    You can’t libel the dead hence the family can’t sue. I’m just gutted this has deflected attention away from what a scumbag Lawlor was. Forget this shit about not speaking ill of the dead the man was scum of the highest order. I couldn’t even care if he did use protitutes that is a nothing compared to what the man did the rest of the time.

    I don´t know how many of you really knew Liam Lawlor personaly. I did and I can only say that he was a great man, lots of fun and strong enough to stand behind his friends when they got into difficulties. No matter what he did or didn´t do in the past, how he dealt with his political issues, Liam was for me somebody really special who I am going to miss grately and always remember him fondly.

    Full Marks to Jana…yes Liam Lawlor was a great and incredibly good Christian. How come he got elected every year for over 25 years,
    because he was a great man, that is why.
    He cared about the people in his constituency and all human beings. He wanted everyone to be well off.
    Remember he was never charged or convicted of any crime. The people in his constituency adored him.
